Due North: 3 Northern Properties You Have To See

Northern Kenya offers more than just wildlife sightings. Immerse yourself in the vibrant traditions of the Samburu and Turkana communities, learning about their ancient customs and way of life. Explore the archaeological wonders of the Turkana Basin, where fossil discoveries shed light on our evolutionary history.

Laikipia boasts one of Africa’s most impressive conservation success stories with dozens of privately owned conservancies being at the forefront of the preservation of this unique landscape. This is prime Big Five territory at the base of snow-capped Mount Kenya. It is also home to many indigenous communities including the Laikipia Maasai and Samburu.

Lewa and Borana are another of Kenya’s best conservation success stories and play home to one of East Africa’s largest rhino habitats. For those who love action packed adventure, this is an ideal spot. Located at the foot of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya, the two conservancies tore down their fences in 2013 to form one giant wildlife habitat totalling over 90,000 acres.

For those living in Kenya, Northern Kenya presents an opportunity to connect with the soul of the country, to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that showcase the diversity and richness of our land. Whether you're seeking adventure, cultural immersion, or simply a break from the ordinary, Northern Kenya promises an unforgettable experience like no other.

A classic safari camp situated along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve, with 14 tented rooms each with their own private decks. Elephant, monkeys and impalas are amongst the camp's many regular wild visitors, whilst Samburu National Reserve has a good number of lions and leopards and offers the opportunity to see many species endemic to Northern Kenya.

One of Kenya’s original private safari experiences located on approximately 65,000acre of private Lewa Conservancy. With just 9 comfortable thatched cottages built to capture the stunning views out over the valley and the sound of the river below where elephants, giraffe, rhino, zebra and more, all come to drink, this is an intimate property offering an intimate experience.

On the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in central Kenya’s Laikipia region lies the atmospheric Ol Pejeta Bush Camp, offering an exceptional base from which to explore the secrets of this renowned conservancy — from the pioneering conservation projects that have made it famous to spectacular sightings of black and white rhino, the Big 5 and the world’s last two remaining Northern white rhino. As with all Asilia camps, staying at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp allows guests to contribute to conservation.
