Kenya, a land of diverse landscapes and breathtaking natural beauty, offers some of the most remarkable hiking experiences in East Africa. Here are our Top 3 Hikes for 2024.
1 MOUNT KENYA
We really couldn't start anywhere else. As the second-highest peak in Africa, Mount Kenya promises an exhilarating hike for both novice and experienced trekkers. The most popular routes are the Naromoru and Sirimon trails, offering a blend of challenging ascents and stunning vistas. The trek peaks at Point Lenana, the third-highest peak, where climbers are rewarded with a sunrise view like no other.
Conveniently located just 10 kilometres outside of Nanyuki town, and with a prime position opposite the airstrip, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of Mount Kenya. With its strategic location, it serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the Mount Kenya region or as a convenient stopover for those venturing towards Laikipia and Northern Kenya.
2 HELL'S GATE NATIONAL PARK
This is the perfect hike for those wanting to start the year with a less strenuous journey. Famous for its unique geology and as the inspiration for Disney's 'The Lion King', Hell's Gate offers a rare chance to hike alongside wildlife like zebras and giraffes. The park's relatively flat terrain is ideal for family trips and includes the spectacular Hell's Gate Gorge and Geothermal Spa.
STAY: GOVERNOR'S LOLDIA HOUSE, NAIVASHA
A charming Kenyan residence nestled on a historic farm along the scenic shores of Lake Naivasha, Governor’s Lolia House offers a serene environment where visitors can unwind by the pool, admire the picturesque views, embark on game drives, or indulge in rejuvenating spa treatments - just what you need after a hike!
3 ABERDARE RANGES
The Aberdare National Park, part of the Aberdare Mountain Range, is a hidden gem for hikers. It's known for its lush landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, including the elusive black leopard. The ranges offer multiple trails varying in difficulty, making it suitable for all levels of hikers.
Situated in the central Kenyan highlands, offering beautiful views of Mount Kenya and surrounded by three wildlife reserves, the lodge provides an ideal base for safari game drives and access to some of the best places in Africa to see rhino. The lodge offers a number of different accommodation styles, including luxury safari tents, comfortable chalets, and cosy family homes.
