If you’ve been in Kenya for a while and haven’t visited Ngare Ndare Forest yet, allow this to be the sign you’ve been waiting for - the time has come to start planning. Tucked away in the heart of Laikipia, Ngare Ndare forest is a lush indigenous forest at the northern foothills of Mt. Kenya. Azure pools glisten at the bottom of waterfalls, surrounded by a canopy of 200 year old trees. The forest is a vital corridor that links the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to Mount Kenya forest reserve, and one which elephants have been using for centuries.

We're currently in the middle of one of Kenya's two wet seasons (April/May long rains November short rains), so plan around visiting towards the beginning of July or during the other months which are usually hot and dry. If you need help with a bespoke itinerary for a weekend getaway to the Laikipia region and booking your accommodation at Resident Rates please drop us a line on [email protected] and one of our Luxury Travel Specialists will be glad to assist.

Tips for visiting Ngarde Ndare

Getting There

Ngare Ndare is located approximately four hours by road from Nairobi, making it accessible on a weekend retreat to Laikipia. From Nanyuki, the drive takes about an hour. For the easiest access to the waterfalls, a 4WD is recommended. It is possible to drive right up to the pools, but the forest walk is highly recommended.

Entrance and Conservation Fees

Upon arrival, there is a conservation fee, which contributes to the preservation and maintenance of the forest. Your contribution supports the vital conservation efforts that make Ngare Ndare a haven for indigenous flora and fauna. There is a vehicle entrance fee of 500ksh and a 1000ksh fee for an armed ranger to accompany you to the falls as the area is frequented by wildlife.

Accommodation

While Ngare Ndare is perfect for a day trip, there is also the option to stay overnight in the campsite within the forest. The campsite is equipped with clean running water, a toilet, bathroom and firewood for the bonfire. For those seeking a more luxurious stay, there are stunning accommodations in the Laikipia region, which you can book at Resident Rates by emailing [email protected]
