The Great Migration - the annual migration of wildebeest from Serengeti to the Mara – has been dubbed one of the “Eight Wonders of the World” and we have compiled a list of 7 best spots to experience this amazing spectacle.

Angama Mara

Located in the Mara Triangle, Angama is perched high above the floor of the Rift Valley with stunning views and has won several global awards. Angama’s tented suites stretch out over two kopjes on the edge of the escarpment with the third having been the scene where Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa was filmed.

Guest’s can indulge in endless game drives, hot air balloon safaris, bush walks, visit a Maasai village for a cultural exchange while exploring the Maasai Mara Game Reserve for The Great Migration.

Emboo River Camp

An entirely eco-friendly, compact and sustainable luxury lodge, Emboo River Camp boasts just six tents, the camp applies a unique ‘Closed-loop System’ that uses renewable and local resources to run all operations to keep its footprint as small as possible.

The camp runs solely on green solar energy, which also powers the Mara’s first electric safari vehicles and Emboo decreased their water consumption by 90% by filtering and reusing all wastewater thanks to indigenous plants.

Located on a river bend within Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve the camp is one of the best locations for watching The Great Migration besides being a real sustainability leader in the world.

Mahali Mzuri

Sir Richard Branson’s spaceship-looking camp in the Mara was recently voted best hotel in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine and boasts 12 luxury tents and is located at the Olare Motorogi Conservancy which is a partnership between local Maasai and tourism players meaning most of the money generated goes back to the community.

Besides game drives, good food, spa treatments and community visits the camp is not far from the Maasai Mara National Reserve and boasts some of the best gane viewing experiences in the whole of the Mara.

Kicheche Mara Camp

Kicheche Mara Camp is a classic safari camp located in the Mara North Conservancy and is co-owned by the renown photographer Paul Goldstein and besides being a photographer’s haven, it is boasts some of the best wildlife and guiding experiences.

Their customized safari vehicles make it easy for both amateur and pro photographers and is just an hour’s drive from the center of the action. If photography is your thing, then this is one of the best camps in the Mara.

Saruni Mara

Ideal for families and multi-generational travel, Saruni Mara is one of the few places in the Mara with luxury cottages and is located at the Mara North Conservancy. The camp places a premium on the community and employs locally besides supporting a lot of projects.

Enjoy some of the best wildlife viewing experiences in the country while at Saruni and during The Great Migration season enjoy hot air balloon safaris or simply drive to the National Reserve.

House in the Wild

One of my favorite locations in the Mara, House in the Wild is a fun little getaway located at the Enonkishu Conservancy. Once an overgrazed and dilapidated land, the community and the Wood family came together to reclaim the land for eco-tourism and 10 years down the line wildlife and cattle coexist in this landscape.

Guests have access to the neighboring Lemek and Ol Chorro Conservancies and the diverse terrain and landscapes make it one of the best game viewing locations in the Mara. Despite the distance to the Maasai Mara National Reserve which is about two hours drive, this makes for an interesting and extended safari through several conservancies and landscapes.

Little Governors’ Camp

The home of the classic BBC wildlife series Big Cat Diaries, Little Governor’s Camp is not so little as it boasts 17 en-suite luxury tents and is located next to a watering hole. The camp is unfenced to make it as natural as possible with elephants passing by quite often and is located at the center of the action at the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
